A Message from the Research Division Director

February 17, 2017

The ASSH is seeking qualified peer reviewers to join the Research Management Committee to evaluate, to critique, and to identify high-quality research projects for potential grant support.  Committee members are selected for their subject matter expertise, their experience with the grants / award process, and their ability to evaluate objectively the quality and potential of a study submission.

As a study section participant, you will:

  • Review a variety of study proposals and provide objective feedback for improvement.
  • Identify quality and meaningful studies to be considered for support through the ASSH Research Division assessment process and the AFSH.
  • Gain a greater understanding of factors that lead to the development of a successful grant and research project.
  • Enjoy a collegial environment and learn from co-reviewers while improving your own grantsmanship.

Each reviewer must commit to providing detailed, objective and timely reviews that provide constructive criticism for each assigned application.  Conflicts of Interest should be disclosed by all members of the committee. Critiques will be shared with each applicant as part of our important mentoring process – strengthening each grant proposal has been critical to the success of our members’ research.  Reviewer scores and critiques will be used to recommend applications for funding to the ASSH Council and AFSH Board of Trustees.

Time Requirements

  • Review 6-10 Basic and/or Clinical Grants over four week period in April/May and provide written reviews and scores for each assignment.
  • Review 3-5 Resident/Fellow Fast Track Grants over two week period in September/October and provide written reviews and scores for each assignment.
  • Attend face-to-face study section review meeting in Chicago in June to review Basic/Clinical grants.  ASSH will cover the cost of your airfare, housing and meals to participate.
  • Occasional (< 3 per year) committee conference calls in order to discuss current and / or future ASSH research initiatives

Three-year term begins on 9/9/2017 and concludes 10/3/2020.  Reviewers are subject to annual review by the RMC Chair and Research Division Director.

Desired Experience

  • Prior experience writing and/or reviewing research applications.
