Urgent Call for Funding: Proposed Touching Hands Project Mission to Honduras

June 14, 2016

The ASSH Touching Hands Project (THP) team performed 122 procedures during our March 2016 trip to Honduras. We are incredibly proud of that work, but a follow-up trip is crucial. THP is the only group that has brought upper extremity outreach to Ruth Paz Hospital, and there are no physicians in the area trained to administer the follow up care that these patients desperately need. The people of Honduras suffer from upper extremity injuries that can result from high amounts of violence in their country. In addition, Honduras has no hand surgeons and is lacking a stable infrastructure. It is a poor country that needs assistance from our surgeons. Read the blog from the March visit to Honduras.

Proposed Mission

Date: November 20-25, 2016
Location: Ruth Paz Hospital / San Pedro Sula, Honduras

Team: 3 hand surgeons, 2-3 hand surgery fellows, 2 hand therapists, 3 anesthesia members, 1 paranesthesia nurse, and 1 OR nurse
Surgical cases:
55-65 (estimated)

Fundraising goal: $35,000

This amount covers volunteer travel expenses and the equipment/supplies required to fulfill this mission. With nine other THP missions on the schedule, we have exhausted our 2016 THP budget. This special mission will not happen without your support. Help us revisit the Honduras patients with serious conditions and deformities who are anxiously waiting for the team's return.
