Supporting Member

As key contributors to the hand and upper extremity, Supporting Members can enhance their knowledge of the field with the unlimited resources of ASSH.  These professionals have access to massive amounts of images, articles and videos for research projects, personal use, and students.  Supporting Members have the ability to work directly with and tap into the brains of hand surgeons everywhere.

Requirements for Applying

Qualifications

Any individual who meets the following qualifications is eligible to apply for ASSH Supporting Membership:

  • Shall not practice hand surgery.
  • Shall have contributed, in the judgment of the Council, to the understanding and/or treatment of disorders of the upper limbs.
  • Shall be of high moral, ethical, and professional standing, as attested to by two (2) members meeting such additional qualifications as established by the Council.
  • Shall support the programs of the Society.

Rights and Responsibilities of Supporting Members

  1. I understand that that if accepted for ASSH Supporting membership I may reference “ASSH Supporting” membership status in published biographical materials.
  2. I acknowledge that I may not advertise or represent myself as a “Member of the ASSH”, but may represent myself as a “Supporting Member of the ASSH.”

  4. I acknowledge that my ASSH Supporting membership may be terminated if I become ineligible for ASSH Supporting membership as defined in the ASSH Bylaws.  
How to Apply

2016 ASSH Supporting Membership Application submission deadline is February 1, 2016

Before applying, please ensure that you read and understand the ASSH Code of Ethics.

Detailed Instructions for 2016 ASSH Supporting Membership application 

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Complete ALL sections of the application form. No part of the application form may be left blank.  Any activities and/or contributions must be added to the application form. Any activities and/or contributions must be added to the application form. CV- curriculum vitae may be included.
  2. Submit your one-time Supporting Membership application fee of $100.  New members will be billed $300 for next year’s annual dues at the end of the year of acceptance.
  3. Submit sponsorship letters from two (2) ASSH Active members elected in 2012 or earlier OR for international Supporting applicants, submit two (2) sponsor letters from either ASSH Active members or ASSH International members (elected 2012 or earlier).  Letters of recommendation from other members of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand (particularly chiefs of service, training program directors, persons familiar with the applicant's practice or contributions to hand surgery, and other qualified individuals) are not required but do serve to strengthen the application.

INSTRUCTIONS REGARDING SPONSOR LETTERS

All sponsors must be Active members in the American Society for Surgery of the Hand – elected in 2012 or earlier – or, for international Supporting applicants, sponsors must be ASSH Active members or ASSH International members (elected 2012 or earlier).  Contact the ASSH Central Office to verify eligibility of sponsors.


Sponsorship letters can be submitted via email, fax, or mail (instructions above) and must follow the following criteria:

  • Include the following information:
      • Length of time sponsor has known the applicant
      • Knowledge of the applicant's present practice
      • Statement of unequivocal support on behalf of the applicant
  • Must be submitted on sponsor's letterhead.
  • Must be signed by sponsor.  

NOTE: In order for an applicant to be considered for 2016 ASSH Supporting membership, all application materials, including completed application, sponsorship letters, paid application fee, etc. must arrive at the ASSH Central Office by close of business on February 1, 2016. Applicants will be notified of their status in writing at least one month prior to the 2016 Annual Meeting.

*Your application and any other information obtained in connection with your application becomes the property of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand upon receipt and will not be returned to the applicant during or at the conclusion of the application process.

Supporting Members

Senior Supporting Members – Reduced Dues

  • Pay $175 in annual dues

Senior Supporting Members- Non-Dues

  • Pay $0 in annual dues
Changing Your Membership Category
As an ASSH Supporting Member, you may be eligible to change your status to one of the following:
 
Senior Supporting Member – Reduced Dues Paying
  • Available to current Supporting Members over the age of 65 and Supporting Members who are completely retired.
  • Pay $175 in annual dues
  • Your benefits will remain the same.
Senior Supporting Member - Non-Dues Paying
  • Available to current Supporting Members over the age of 65 and Supporting Members who are completely retired.
  • Pay $0 in annual dues
  • You will no longer receive the Journal of Hand Surgery either in print or online.

Search Tips

Tip 1: Start with the basics like “carpal tunnel.” You can always add more words later to narrow down results.

Tip 2: Choose words carefully and avoid terms that do not concern surgery.

Tip 3: Avoid capitalization and conjunctions like “the,” “and,” “or,” or “in.” Also, avoid using media types like “video,” “article,” and “picture.”

Tip 4: Your results can be refined by using either the tabs at the top (Video, Articles/WEB, Images, JHS, Products/Vendors), or the filters on the left (Filter by Source, Filter by Format, Filter by Purpose, etc.).

Tip 5: Punctuation can enhance your search as well. Use quotes (“search term”) to only include pages with the same words in the same order. But only use this if you are looking for an exact word or phrase, otherwise you may exclude helpful results. Add an asterisk (search term*) as a placeholder for any unknown or wildcard terms. For example, C*l Tunnel would give you results for Cubital Tunnel and Carpal Tunnel. Place a question mark (search term?) for single-character wildcard matching. For example, pa?ent would give you results for parent, patent, etc. You may also use the plus sign (search + word) between words for words you must have in the results.
