Active Member

The American Society for Surgery of the Hand holds its Active Members to the highest standard of any other professional medical organization.  In turn, our Active members are handed resources to benefit their skills, practice, patients, and future.  They have opportunities to influence the hand and upper extremity specialty that no other physicians have.

Requirements for Applying

Active membership may be granted to any individual who:

  • Shall reside in the United States or Canada.
  • Shall be fully licensed to practice medicine in a state, territory, or province of competent jurisdiction and shall have hospital privileges in hand surgery.
  • Shall be certified in general, orthopaedic, or plastic surgery by the appropriate American Specialty Board and shall hold a Certification in the Subspecialty of Surgery of the Hand (formerly CAQ Hand) or shall be certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and shall have completed twelve (12) months of satisfactory post-residency fellowship in surgery of the hand; or, in special circumstances, shall be exempted from the criteria in this subparagraph if the members of Council unanimously determine that the individual has made extraordinary contributions to the understanding and treatment of disorders of the upper limb and/or the education and training of physicians in hand surgery.
  • Shall be of high moral, ethical and professional standing, as attested to by two (2) active members and the applicant’s fellowship director, or if the applicant is not fellowship trained, then by (3) active members
  • Shall have attended, by the application due date, one Annual Meeting of the Society within the last three years. “Attendance” at an ASSH Annual Meeting is considered a full paid registration and is not fulfilled by single day registrations, individual pre or post course registrations, or acting as faculty/presenter/discusser for a course.
  • Shall have performed at least 125 major hand surgery operations in a consecutive 12-month period, in categories delineated on the application form.
  • Shall have made worthwhile contributions in areas of hand surgery including: publications, teaching, clinical practice, basic research or participation in educational activities of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand.
How to Apply

The 2016 ASSH Active Membership Application submission deadline was February 1, 2016. 2017 ASSH Active Membership applications will be available in August of 2016.

Before applying, please ensure that you read and understand the ASSH Code of Ethics.

Detailed Instructions for the 2016 ASSH Active Membership application

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Complete ALL sections of the application form. No part of the application form may be left blank.  Any activities and/or contributions must be added to the application form. Do not attach your curriculum vitae.
  2. Submit your one-time Active Membership application fee of $400.  A one-time first year membership fee of $700 will be billed upon the candidate's acceptance for Active Membership in the ASSH. New members will be billed $750 for next year’s annual dues at the end of the year of acceptance.
  3. Submit sponsorship letters from your hand fellowship director and two ASSH Active members,  elected in 2012 or earlier. Letters of recommendation from other members of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand (particularly chiefs of service, training program directors, persons familiar with the applicant's practice or contributions to hand surgery, and other qualified individuals) are not required but do serve to strengthen the application.
  4. Include a copy of your CAQ certificate (letter from the Board stating that you have passed the CAQ is acceptable if you do not have your certificate at the time of application), your Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada certificate (applicants with Royal College certification must also submit proof of having completed twelve (12) months of satisfactory post-residency fellowship in surgery of the hand), OR other international certification.
  5. Submit a case list of hand and upper extremity cases performed during a consecutive 12-month period. See Case List Submission Instructions listed on page 6 of the application. The ASSH reserves the right to request additional case list information in order to complete the review of any applicant.

SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS

  2. Paper submissions:  All paper submissions should be mailed originals. Please send to:

  3. Limitations:  Any applicant for active membership who does not qualify for membership, and whose application is denied, may only reapply one additional time unless an exception is granted by Council. For any subsequent application submitted, the applicant must disclose all information regarding his/her prior application(s).



INSTRUCTIONS REGARDING SPONSOR LETTERS

Sponsorship letters can be submitted via email, fax, or mail (instructions above) and must follow the following criteria: Sponsor must be ASSH Active members joined 2012 or earlier.

  • Include the following information:
      • Length of time sponsor has known the applicant 
      • Knowledge of the applicant's present practice 
      • Statement of unequivocal support on behalf of the applicant 
  • Must be submitted on sponsor's letterhead. 
  • Must be signed by sponsor.

NOTE: In order for an applicant to be considered for 2016 ASSH Active membership, all application materials, including completed application, sponsorship letters, paid application fee, etc. must arrive at the ASSH Central Office by close of business on February 1, 2016. Applicants will be notified of their status in writing at least one month prior to the 2016 Annual Meeting.

*Your application and any other information obtained in connection with your application becomes the property of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand upon receipt and will not be returned to the applicant during or at the conclusion of the application process.

Maintaining Your Status

ASSH Active Members are required to:

  • Attend at least one (1) ASSH Annual Meeting during a three (3) year period in accordance with the Bylaws:
      • "Any active member absent from three (3) consecutive annual meetings shall be dropped from the membership roster unless the absence is excused by the Council."
      • Active Members must attend the full three-day meeting to fulfill the Annual Meeting attendance requirement.  The requirement is not fulfilled by single day registrations, individual pre or post course registrations, or acting as faculty/presenter/discusser for a course.  Members must pick up their registration packets from the registration desk as attendance verification.
      • Active Members may request a waiver of the ASSH Annual Meeting attendance requirement by downloading the request form and submitting to: Membership at: membership@assh.org or fax: (847) 384-1435 or mail to the ASSH Central Office. 
      • Review the list of future ASSH Annual Meeting Dates and locations.
  • Pay annual dues of $750

Changing Your Membership Category
As an ASSH Active Member, you may be eligible to change your status to one of the following:


Retired Member – Dues Paying:

  • Available for those who have fully retired from the practice of medicine, regardless of age.
  • You will keep your full Active Membership benefits.
  • Dues: $420

Retired Member – Non-Dues Paying:

  • Available for those who have fully retired from the practice of medicine, regardless of age.
  • This category has limited benefits.  You will no longer receive the Journal of Hand Surgery, and you will no longer be listed in Find a Hand Surgeon.
  • Dues: $0

To request a change in membership status please complete the Change In Membership Category Status Form.

The ASSH Lifetime Membership category is automatically conferred on ASSH Active Members upon reaching 30 years of ASSH Active Membership.

Lifetime Member – Dues Paying:
  • Automatic for Active Members for 30 or more years.
  • You will keep your full Active Membership Benefits.
  • Dues: $420
Lifetime Member – Non-Dues Paying:
 
  • Available to Active Members for 30 or more years.
  • This category has limited benefits.  You will no longer receive the Journal of Hand Surgery, and you will no longer be listed in Find a Hand Surgeon.
  • Dues: $0

Search Tips

Tip 1: Start with the basics like “carpal tunnel.” You can always add more words later to narrow down results.

Tip 2: Choose words carefully and avoid terms that do not concern surgery.

Tip 3: Avoid capitalization and conjunctions like “the,” “and,” “or,” or “in.” Also, avoid using media types like “video,” “article,” and “picture.”

Tip 4: Your results can be refined by using either the tabs at the top (Video, Articles/WEB, Images, JHS, Products/Vendors), or the filters on the left (Filter by Source, Filter by Format, Filter by Purpose, etc.).

Tip 5: Punctuation can enhance your search as well. Use quotes (“search term”) to only include pages with the same words in the same order. But only use this if you are looking for an exact word or phrase, otherwise you may exclude helpful results. Add an asterisk (search term*) as a placeholder for any unknown or wildcard terms. For example, C*l Tunnel would give you results for Cubital Tunnel and Carpal Tunnel. Place a question mark (search term?) for single-character wildcard matching. For example, pa?ent would give you results for parent, patent, etc. You may also use the plus sign (search + word) between words for words you must have in the results.

×
