The Psychological Impact of Severe Hand Injury

Summary:

Mutilating hand injuries can be associated with stress and anxiety disorders, major depression, pain syndromes and adjustments problems.  Up to 94% of individuals with a severe hand injury experience symptoms associated with one of these disorders
 
The authors reviewed the literature with respect to the psychological impact of severe hand injuries and outlined recommendations for promoting a positive outcome.  They emphasize that evolving treatment strategies include improved surgical techniques, advancements in pain management, psychotherapeutic input, and involvement of patients in decision making for treatment.
