Description:
The approach to the assessment and management of the severely injured hand presents an enormous responsibility to the hand surgeon and should be part of the training and experience of all involved in the care of upper limb problems. This course will provide the participant with an in-depth appreciation of the multi-faceted reconstructive problems following mutilating injuries. Based upon a series of case presentations, the faculty will provide insight based upon their extensive personal experience as to the many issues regarding reconstructive procedures
and outcomes.

Objectives:

- Identify the development of a structured approach to the decision making regarding a severely injured hand
- Recognize the indications for salvage versus amputation of injured structures
- Explain how to manage composite defects including types of soft tissue reconstructions
- Define secondary reconstruction of bone defects
- Evaluate the evidence to date of outcomes of the reconstructive treatments
