Description:
The treatment of bony deficits and avascular necrosis are difficult problems with the hand and upper extremity. These problems are made only more complex when they occur in a child, where the requirements for continued bony growth complicate reconstructive efforts. This panel will provide an overview of reconstructive options for bony defects within the pediatric extremity. Topics will cover the use of vascularized bone grafts in the treatment of avascular necrosis of the pediatric carpus, vascularized growth plate transfer for the treatment of the distal radius articular and epiphyseal injuries, the results of vascularized toe transfer for the treatment of radial club hand and digital aplasia Upon completion of the course participants should be familiar with treatment options for vascularized epiphyseal transfer, digit and joint transfer for the treatment of congenital and acquired defects throughout the hand and wrist. This DVD is from the 2007 ASSH Annual Meeting.
Objectives:
-To identify appropriate candidate and donor sites for vascularized growth plate transfer.
-Understand principles of vascularized growth plate
transfer in the treatment of congenital radial hypoplasia, symbrachydactyly and tumors of the distal radius and proximal humerus.
-Become familiar with treatment options for vascularized epiphyseal transfer, digit and joint transfer for the treatment of congenital and acquired defects throughout the pediatric hand and wrist.
