Symposium 1
Managing Thumb CMC Arthritis: Concepts and Controversies
Thursday, September 3
2:15 - 3:00 PM

MODERATOR
Roy A. Meals, MD, Los Angeles, CA

FACULTY

Melvin P. Rosenwasser, MD, New York, NY
Patricia A. Taylor, PT, CHT, Edmond, OK
Matthew M. Tomaino, MD, MBA, Rochester, NY

OVERVIEW
Osteoarthritis at the thumb base is a commonly encountered clinical problem and consensus is lacking regarding the optimal non-operative and operative treatments. Faculty will discuss a spectrum of current treatment options and expose the rationale or lack of rationale for their use.

EDUCATION GOAL
At the conclusion of the symposium, the learner will be able to discuss current treatment concepts, both non-operative and operative, for osteoarthritis at the thumb base.

Symposium 2
Flexor Tendon Injury in Zone II: Achieving Optimal Treatment Outcome
Thursday, September 3
3:45 - 4:30 PM

MODERATOR
Ghazi M. Rayan, MD, Oklahoma City, OK

FACULTY
Peter C. Amadio, MD, Rochester, MN
Judy C. Colditz, OTR/L, CHT, FAOTA, Raleigh, NC
Richard H. Gelberman, MD, St. Louis, MO

OVERVIEW
Despite the immense basic science research and advances towards understanding the biology of flexor tendon healing, management of tendon injuries in Zone II remains a challenge to the treating hand surgeon and therapist. Excellent results after flexor tendon surgery are difficult to achieve and complications are not uncommon. This program will provide the hand surgeon and therapist with current, practical and evidence based information that can be applied to clinical practice. Surgical and rehabilitation tips and pearls will be offered that will aid in preventing complications and improving functional outcome after flexor tendon surgery.

EDUCATION GOALS

  • Highlight factors that influence treatment outcomes of flexor tenorrhaphy
  • Review common surgical techniques of flexor tendon repair and reconstruction
  • Discuss complications of flexor tenorrhaphy, their prevention and treatment
  • Outline tested postoperative rehabilitation methods for flexor tendon surgery
