ASHT Precourse 04: When Work Gets on Your Nerves

Wednesday, September 2, 2009 (12:30 - 4:30 PM)
Hilton San Francisco
San Francisco, CA

Sponsored by: American Society of Hand Therapists

CHAIR
Peter Edgelow, DPT, Hayward, CA
Course Overview:
This precourse provides an updated clinical model, related to the management of neurovascular entrapment syndromes, with the focus on thoracic outlet syndrome. The clinical model challenges current thinking regarding the pathogenesis of repetitive strain injuries and provides new information on the assessment of potential risk factors for these injuries. This precourse highlights a clinical reasoning framework for utilizing a patient-centered treatment approach. Refinements to patient examination, suggested pathophysiology, treatment techniques and prevention strategies for neurovascular entrapment syndromes of the upper extremities and their manifestation as repetitive strain injuries are also discussed.
Objectives:
  • To train the practitioner in the core of the Edgelow Protocol for treating neurovascular entrapments in the region of the thoracic outlet
  • To articulate the factors that may contribute to the neurovascular and sensory motor deficits of individuals with chronic pain and cumulative trauma disorders
  • To identify the interview and physical examination commonalties among patients with thoracic outlet syndrome and repetitive strain injuries (RSI)
  • To utilize strategies for educating and empowering the patient to assume responsibility for optimizing his/her health and function
  • To be able to perform and articulate the rationale for the Edgelow Protocol for examining and treating TOS and RSI
