The American Foundation for Surgery of the Hand was founded by the Council of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand in February of 1986. The purposes for creating the Foundation were to address the rising expense of providing continuing medical education (CME) and allow the Hand Society to remain committed to its mission of providing continuing education.
The American Foundation for Surgery of the Hand is governed by a Board of Trustees under the direction of the Chair, Peter J. Stern, MD

"My goal is to create a culture of philanthropy among the stakeholders of the Foundation. With this culture, we will have the ability to continue to fund research and education programs vital to the future of Hand Surgery." Peter J. Stern, MD, AFSH Chair
