ASHT Precourse 03: A Comprehensive Analysis of Flexor and Extensor Tendon Rehabilitation

Wednesday, September 2, 2009 (12:30 - 4:30 PM)
Hilton San Francisco
San Francisco, CA

Sponsored by: American Society of Hand Therapists

CHAIR
Rebecca von der Heyde, PhD(c), OTR/L, CHT, St. Louis, MO

FACULTY
Julianne Howell, PT, MS, CHT, Albany, OR

Course Overview:
Rehabilitation of flexor and extensor tendon injuries has historically been characterized by delayed initiation of motion with wrist and digits held in protected positions. Despite the evolution of the literature, many surgeons and clinicians continue to focus on progression of treatment, as opposed to early, controlled motion during the first post-operative week. This precourse introduces participants to the most recent flexor and extensor tendon literature and offers opportunities for careful analysis of clinical practice from an evidence-based perspective.
Objectives:
  • To describe and discuss the palmar and dorsal anatomy that contributes to typical flexion and extension of the digits
  • To integrate relevant physiology and implications for healing
  • To compare and contrast progression of flexor tendon rehabilitation by force vs. excursion
  • To analyze early motion of extensor tendons in zone 4-7
  • To examine your own clinical practice for integration of presented concepts

Continuing Education
Participants will receive 4.00 continuing education hours.

Continuing Medical Education
The ASSH designates this educational activity for a maximum of 4.00 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™.  Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
