The American Foundation for Surgery of the Hand was founded by the Council of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand in February of 1986. The purposes for creating the Foundation were to address the rising expense of providing continuing medical education (CME) and allow the Hand Society to remain committed to its mission of providing continuing education.
The American Foundation for Surgery of the Hand is governed by a Board of Trustees under the direction of the Chair, Andrew J. Weiland, MD.

"Over the past several years the Foundation has been extremely successful in terms of fundraising and the distribution of research grants to our members. In many instances these grants have served as a spring board for significant funding from other institutions such as the NIH. We need to continue to nurture the culture of philanthropy among our members so we can expand our efforts in funding research and educational programs for the benefit of our patients, members and the future of hand surgery."
