Celebrate, Participate, and Motivate:
A Formula for Success

Celebrate ---

The celebration of the 25th anniversary of the American Foundation for Surgery of the Hand gives us a reason to pause and admire the great progress that has been made in growing and expanding the original vision of the Foundation’s founders.  This success is a product of the generous support received from ASSH members and corporate partners.  It is with deep gratitude that I thank all our donors.  Your support makes them true leaders in the advancement of hand surgery.

The mission and reach of the Foundation continues to expand to support:

Research
We are honored to have awarded $500,000 in research grants in 2013.  Since 2007, $1,377,500 in AFSH grants have funded research that was of such high quality that it has generated 11,653,869 in additional grant support.  These are research projects which will generate results that will ultimately help us all improve the care of our patients.  It is also an incredible return on our investment.
Education
The Richard H. Gelberman Traveling Educator Award was announced at the 2013 ASSH meeting.  It is a traveling fellowship awarded to a young surgeon for the purpose of visiting a national or international center of excellence in order to learn necessary operative or research techniques that will be utilized in the surgeon’s practice of hand and upper extremity surgery.

Two new funds have been formed and will be formally announced at the 2014 ASSH meeting:
The A. Lee Osterman Excellence in Education Fund will provide a $5,000 honorarium each year to an ASSH member of at least 15 years, who has demonstrated excellence as an educator.  This fund will also help support the ASSH Annual Meeting Scholarship program to encourage residents and fellows to attend the Annual Meeting.
The Daniel C. Riordan Education Fund, will provide a $1,500 scholarship each year for a resident or fellow to attend the ASSH Residents and Fellows Conference and ASSH Annual Meeting.

Outreach
Touching Hands Project - Dr. Kozin will lead an AFSH sponsored mission to Haiti in February 2014 in collaboration with Partners in Health to connect those in need with the expertise of the ASSH membership.

Participate ---

We need your help to advance these projects and to continue to grow the Foundation.  Why donate?  93 cents of every dollar donated goes to its stated purpose.  This is a fund efficiency not seen in most other organizations!  You have freedom to choose where your donation is used, designating it for research, education, outreach, or by donating to a specific named fund.  You will be integral in supporting a cause that will directly impact the future of hand surgery not only in the USA but worldwide.

As we enter this holiday season and make year-end giving decisions, I hope we can count on your support to advance hand surgery research, education, and outreach.

Motivate ---

I would also ask that you volunteer to call a colleague to make them aware of the work of the Foundation and motivate them to become involved and pledge support.  Together we are advancing the specialty of hand surgery and improving the care of our patients.  Thank you for your support!
