Edward Akelman, MD
As I shared at this year’s Annual Meeting, we are living in an exciting and transformative time of educational change at the American Society for Surgery of the Hand. Over the last year, a cadre of volunteers and staff have worked on creating an online platform that pulls together the vast array of the Hand Society’s educational resources and makes them available through one online portal. That portal is called Hand-e, and it will soon be available to all ASSH members free-of-charge as a benefit of membership.
Hand-e will bring together recordings from past Annual Meetings, videos from face-to-face courses Comprehensive Review and Specialty Day, surgical skills videos from ASSH publications and so much more into one website. The portal will also pull in content from the new American Society for Surgery of the Hand Textbook of Hand and Upper Extremity Surgery. If you have purchased a copy of the textbook, you will be able to quickly navigate from Hand-e directly into the online textbook content. In time, the Hand-e search engine will also search Journal of Hand Surgery content so that with one search you can quickly ascertain all relevant content available to you from ASSH.
When Hand-e goes live later this month, ASSH members will have free access to all of the recordings and handouts from the 2013 ASSH Annual Meeting as well as a rich collection of surgical skills videos. Over the next few months, additional content, new and old, will be added so that by next summer, Hand-e will have over 5,000 individual content items, all available to you as a benefit of membership.
Keeping this content fresh and relevant is a huge job, and for that reason, the position of Hand-e Editor has been created. A call for applications was held this fall and several very qualified members responded. After a competitive application and interview process, I am pleased to announce that Michael Hausman, MD will be our first Hand-e Editor. For the last year and a half Michael has been instrumental in defining and envisioning the scope of Hand-e. It is fitting that he will be at the helm when Hand-e goes live, and as it grows and evolves in the coming months and year. Michael will serve as chief content curator and is already recruiting a team of volunteer editors to work with him to make Hand-e a living, relevant resource for our membership.
Watch for further announcements about Hand-e, coming soon!

ASSH is sad to report the passing of former Past-President and Lifetime Member, Lee W. Milford, Jr., MD. Dr. Milford mentored and trained many aspiring hand surgeons from the US and around the globe. These became the “Milford Hand Club.” He was also the author of the classic hand surgery text, The Hand
, which he illustrated with his own photographs. Read Dr. Milford's full obituary here
Please consider pledging a major gift of $25,000 to the 25th AFSH Anniversary Campaign. Did you know that drug/device manufacturers are not required to provide physicians with pre-submission reports prior to submitting to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS)? Be prepared by tracking all gifts, meals, and other payments or transfers of value received, by using the free CMS “Open Payments” mobile app. While the app does not interact with the CMS reporting system, it’s a handy way to track information which can be used to validate information submitted by manufacturers about payments made to you. Download the app through the Apple
