2011 National Health Insurer Report Card Released - from the AMA
Thanks to a new format and having our members select the topics for the Members Business Meeting in Boston, it was our best attended members’ meeting in years. I’ve decided to continue the process Bob Szabo, MD began last year.
Members voted on the topics that were of greatest interest to them and even suggested topics we didn’t consider. Last year’s Members Business Meeting was a great success and I’m pleased to announce that we will again ask your input to help shape the 2011 MBM agenda. Keep an eye out for more information, and be sure to attend the Members Business Meeting on Thursday, September 8th from 11:30 am – 12:30 pm at the Mandalay Convention Center, room Mandalay Bay E.
… that ASSH Member Andrew W. Gurman, MD, was elected speaker of the American Medical Association (AMA) House of Delegates (HOD), the policy-making body of America’s largest physician organization.
Previously, Dr. Gurman served as the vice speaker of the AMA-HOD, and has been an active participant in the workings of the AMA Board of Trustees, serving as liaison to the AMA’s Council on Constitution and Bylaws; Council on Legislation; Organized Medical Staff Section; and Advisory Committee on Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender Issues. He has also served as a board member of the AMA Foundation. Congratulations Dr. Gurman and thank you for your continued dedication.
Megan Meislin, MD and Jason Jagodzinski, MD, PGY3 Orthopaedic residents at Loyola University, reviewed the Apple app “Papers,” designed to help organize research papers.
Have you ever wanted to recall an article you read in last month’s Journal of Hand Surgery but could not remember the reference? With the application Papers for your iPhone, iPad or Apple computer, you can have your own personal library of medical journal articles. The application costs $14.99 to download to your iPad and closer to $80 for the desktop version, but it is well worth the investment. Papers allows you to compile, organize, search, annotate, share and reference articles you find helpful in your practice. All of the highlights and annotations that you make will be saved for future reference and can be easily emailed to your colleagues. Through an easy-to-use interface, this repository stores your favorite articles in a PDF file to your library for future use.
As residents at Loyola University, we have personally used this application on both our personal computers and iPads to store, search and annotate all the articles that we read during our training. We are able to share articles that include our own annotations with each other. Specifically, for every conference and journal club we attend, we can store the pertinent articles in Papers so that we can reference them at a later date. We are able to quickly reference an article prior to stepping into the operating room and then take notes about the surgery afterwards. This has become an invaluable application that we recommend to all medical practitioners, at least those who are Apple-inclined. Sorry PC users, there is not yet a compatible version for Windows.
If there is an app that you find to be helpful and would like to share a review, contact Tara Havenga (thavenga@assh.org) at the Central Office so it can be included in a future Weekly Member Update.

If your office routinely refers patients to the Find a Hand Surgeon feature on the ASSH website, you can now direct them to the url of findahandsurgeon.com. This will take them directly to the Find a Hand Surgeon pages. Thank you to Charlie Eaton, MD for the suggestion!

Participate in hands-on learning in an arthroplasty lab covering the hand, wrist and elbow. This Master Skills program offers a unique course format that focuses on the ultimate lab experience. Each of the six scheduled labs allow attendees to choose tracks from the leading manufacturers to practice surgical skills with guidance from hand and upper extremity experts. Particular emphasis will be placed on operative pearls relative to each implant.
There will be no formal didactic lectures. Instead, case study leaders will moderate case reviews and facilitate discussion to highlight the pearls and pitfalls of hand, wrist and elbow arthroplasty. A low participant to faculty ratio means better facilitation, interaction, communication and learning. This is one lab program you do not want to miss!

2011 National Health Insurer Report Card Released – from the AMA
The AMA today revealed the results of its fourth annual National Health Insurer Report Card, which highlights the strengths and weaknesses of the claims processing systems used by eight of the nation’s largest insurers. This is a key initiative of the AMA’s “Heal the Claims Process”™ campaign, which seeks to eliminate waste from the claims process and free up time and resources to devote to patient care.
