ASSH Weekly Member Upd@te

May 8, 2009

One Question

Should the Hand Society adopt sponsorship for Weekly Member Update?

ASSH is considering soliciting industry to help underwrite the costs of Weekly Member Update (WMU).  In return for their financial support, their logo would appear in the WMU like the ASSH logo below.

Weigh in on this week's One Question.

Our Society

I have just returned from the meeting of the joint meeting of the British Society for Surgery of the Hand and the American Society for Surgery of the Hand, which was held in London. It was an outstanding scientific and educational experience. Our British counterparts were outstanding hosts, and we discussed mutually beneficial collaborations for both societies. An example of cooperative member benefits is the ability of an ASSH member to purchase The European Journal of Hand Surgery at a 50% savings. Larger savings are possible if 50% or more of our members are interested in subscribing to this outstanding journal. To determine interest, The Hand Society will send out a survey about interest in BJHS subscriptions next week.

Administraion to Move Forward with DMEPOS Bidding Program

American Medical News reports that the Obama administration plans to proceed with a controversial bidding rule for durable medical equipment, prosthetics, orthotics, and supplies (DMEPOS). The White House had previously delayed the effective date of the rule in order to review late changes approved by the Bush administration, but the U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services announced that the new April 18 effective date would not be delayed any further. The program was created to decrease DMEPOS costs, enhance quality, and prevent fraud, but critics predict that it will eliminate as many as 90 percent of suppliers from the marketplace. Without legislative intervention, the program will start in 2010.

FTC Pushes Back Red Flag Rule Compliance Date

The compliance date for the new Federal Trade Commission's (FTC) "Red Flags Rule" has been pushed back to  August 1.  The rule was originally slated to take effect today, May 1, but yesterday the FTC voted to postpone the date.

The American Medical Association (AMA) is continuing its efforts to persuade the FTC that physicians are not "creditors" and therefore should not be subject to the rule, but physician practices should be ready to comply on Friday.

Visit the AMA website for a sample policy to help physicians incorporate a simple identity theft prevention and detection program into their existing compliance and HIPAA and privacy policies.
