Applications are now available for open positions on Council of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand. There are two open Member-at-Large at large positions, one for a member who joined ASSH before 2001, and one for a member who joined after 2001. The Vice-president position is also open.

ASSH to Explore Textbook Publication
Request for Proposal Available for Interested Authors
The Educations Division is soliciting proposals from authors interested in working with the Hand Society on a hand surgery textbook. The Society will consider a variety of different publication options outlined in the request for proposal (RFP), which is posted and available for download on the website.
All details, specifications, and partnership options for the information needed are outlined in the RFP.
The April 24th deadline is here! Please plan to submit the proposal to the central office, attn Jennifer Gremmels, electronically at jgremmels@assh.org or hard copy by April 24, 2009 for consideration.
Third Party Fellowship Funding Now Available
Two new funding sources are available through OMeGA and OREF. Both organizations are now accepting applications for fellowship funding for the 2009-2010 academic year.
OMeGA
Grants are available for orthopaedic fellowships (up to $75,000) in nine sub-specialty areas, including hand surgery, and residency/general education (up to $5,000). Funds will be awarded through a consistent, clearly established process, according to objective criteria, and independent of program size, personnel, or affiliation. Funding for 2009 is limited to programs in the Americas.
Friday, May 8, 2009 is the deadline for submitting grant applications. Please direct your questions to info@omegamedicalgrants.org.
OREF
OREF continues to seek additional industry partners in hopes of securing more funding for fellowships across the spectrum of orthopaedics, and will soon invite applications for institutional grants to enhance academic residency training programs. Additional information, visit http://www.oref.org/.

The Sterling Bunnell Traveling Fellowship is an outstanding educational experience for the recipient. The deadline for receipt of completed applications is June 1, 2009. Final selection of the recipient of this 29th Sterling Bunnell Traveling Fellowship will be made immediately before the 64th Annual Meeting, September 3-5, 2009, in San Francisco, CA and will be announced during the meeting.

This course will provide a state of the art update on open and arthroscopic techniques of elbow surgery. A renowned faculty of leading elbow surgeons will present lectures, panel discussions and hands-on training in the cadaver laboratory. AMA and MGMA Partner to Help Members with Medicare Enrollment
To help physician practices navigate the new requirements of the Medicare enrollment process, the AMA andthe Medical Group Management Association (MGMA) developed a new online toolkit to help physicians navigate the complicated enrollment process.
Starting April 1st, physicians now have only 30 days to make changes to their enrollment information, such as a new practice address, and their enrollment status could be revoked if they do not comply with the timeframe. Assuming physicians have met all the Medicare enrollment requirements, they will only be able to bill Medicare retroactively for 30 days once they are successfully enrolled, rather than up to 27 months as was previously permitted.
Twenty Percent of Americans Postponing Health Care
A survey of 12,000 Americans conducted by Thomson Reuters Healthcare (New York) during February/March 2009 finds that 20 of those surveyed have delayed or postponed medical care, and of those, 24 percent said that cost was the primary reason. In a previous survey conducted in 2006, 15.9 percent said they had postponed or canceled medical care in the past year. More than 54 percent who skipped care said they missed a physician's visit, while 8 percent said they delayed or skipped medical imaging of some sort. Additionally, 21 percent of respondents overall stated that they expect to have difficulty paying for either health insurance or healthcare services during the next 3 months.
