A Message from the ASSH President

National and state policies affect our medical practices everyday in nearly everything we do.  As physicians, it's important for us not only to stay abreast what happens in the legislature, but to influence it when our voices can make a difference.  The Hand Society may be small, but there are still ways we can advocate for our own interests and the interests of our patients.  The Government Affairs Committee has started an initiative to unite the voices of those of us interested in governmental policies and their implications.  Read a message from the committee chairs below to find out how you can get involved through the ASSH.

Sincerely,
Bob Szabo, MD, MPH

With the start of the fall campaigns, the Government Affairs Committee would like to take a more proactive role. We want to be able to provide the membership of the ASSH with the information they need to make decisions that have political implications and, where possible, influence those decisions. To do that we will be creating a database of politically active and interested ASSH members.

To accomplish these goals, the Government Affairs Committee needs your help. We would like to know who amongst us is actively involved in their state medical and/or surgical societies. We also would like to know who amongst us knows or treats people who have influence on decisions and policies which affect our profession. For obvious reasons, we do not need to know the names of the influential patients you treat, but we would like to know who amongst us treats such patients. Since numerous studies consistently show that politicians respect the opinions of individual physicians, our goal is to provide you with the tools to engage the decision makers in reasonable, logical discussion.

If you are actively involved in your state medical or surgical society, or if you know or treat someone who can influence major policy decisions, we would like to hear from you. To make it easy, all you have to do is complete a short survey to indicate your interest. You can also email smeyerhughes@assh.org if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Bruce Leslie, MD and Benjamin Levine, MD
ASSH Government Affairs Committee Co-Chairs
