On March 27-29, 2011, the 5th Combined Meeting of the Japanese and American Societies for Surgery of the Hand will be held in Maui. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn from our Japanese medical peers as well as hear from great speakers of our own, like W.P. Andrew Lee, MD and Chris Pederson, MD. Dr. Lee will give an update on transplantation, and Dr. Pederson will provide a review of the latest microsurgical advances.
In addition to the meeting’s educational benefits, there are other perks as well. While it may cold across much of the U.S. in March, Maui will be beautiful and warm. The timing and location of the meeting would be an excellent spring break vacation destination for you and your families. With the beach, pools, spa, wonderful restaurants and nearby golf courses, there is something for everyone to enjoy.
There is still time to register for this event – early bird registration has been extended to January 16th. Hope to see you there!

Evidence Based Practice Committee Chair, David Ring, MD, PhD, has started an interesting discussion of this month's Feature Article. Participants are currently discussing patients with worker's compensation who have had more surgery and pursue more treatment than patients with other types of insurance. Read Dr. Ring's discussion points and share your opinions with fellow ASSH members.

Court Upholds Tax Requirement for Medical Residents - From AAOS
The Wall Street Journal reports that the US Supreme Court has upheld an Internal Revenue Service requirement that medical residents pay Social Security taxes. Although full-time students who work are generally considered exempt from Social Security taxes, the court upheld the Treasury Department’s position that medical residents are full-time employees, not students. Court documents show that Social Security taxes on residents account for about $700 million in annual revenue to the federal government. Learn more.
"Doc Fix" Amendment Included in PPACA Repeal Bill - From AAOS
A key component of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) is a provision—effective in 2014—that requires most individuals to purchase health insurance or pay a penalty. In addition, the ACA significantly expands health insurance coverage to the uninsured through the Medicaid program. Since passage of the ACA, numerous lawsuits have been filed, several of which are summarized here, challenging the constitutional authority of Congress to enact an individual mandate and expand the Medicaid program.
