As soon as the dust from the Annual Meeting began to settle, our 2009 Young Leaders were just getting started.  They are now beginning to engage in rigorous conversations about the future of hand surgery, especially in the area of education.  I look forward to having a robust conversation about their findings at the December Council meeting.

Best regards,

Sharing a Hand Program – Call for Volunteers

For four years, Richard Bernstein, MD has overseen the Sharing a Hand program at Yale University School of Medicine. The Sharing a Hand program was developed in collaboration with the Rheumatology Department in order to unify the approach of hand surgery between rheumatologists and hand surgeons.  The rotating bimonthly conference series provides an opportunity for hand surgeons to teach and interact with the community and faculty rheumatologists.

Dr. Bernstein is looking for volunteers to be coordinators for this program at other institutions in the U.S. The role of the coordinator is to contact the Rheumatology fellowship director, explain the purpose and goal of this program, and work to establish the lecture series. They are looking for a representative at each institution who is willing to coordinate the program at his or her institution.  The school coordinator may recruit other hand surgeons, residents, and fellows to participate in the program.

To register and sign up or if you have questions, please call 203.401.0037 or email Dr. Bernstein at  HandShare@gmail.com.

New Resource To Help Physicians Prepare For the HIPAA Breach Notification Rule - From AMA

New regulations effective Sept. 23, 2009 require all physicians who are covered by HIPAA to notify patients if there are breaches of security involving unsecured patient information. New AMA guidance summarizes these new requirements. These requirements apply in addition to any notification obligations imposed by state law. These requirements also supplement the obligations imposed by the HIPAA Privacy and Security Rules.

AAOS, Other Organizations, Cannot Support Current Baucus Bill - From AAOS

In a letter sent last week to ranking members of the U.S. Senate Finance Committee, AAOS, along with other members of the Alliance of Specialty Medicine, states that it cannot support the healthcare reform bill proposed by committee chair Sen. Max Baucus (D-Mont.). Among the reasons given for not supporting the bill:

  • The bill does no provide a permanent solution for the Medicare Sustainable Growth Rate formula, which currently calls for a 21 percent reduction in reimbursement in 2010.
  • The bill calls for budget-neutral funding, which could increase reimbursement for primary care at the expense of specialty care.
  • The bill would remove oversight of Medicare payments from Congress.
  • The Alliance is concerned that the bill could make the Physician’s Quality Reporting Initiative punitive by eliminating incentives and replacing them with penalties.
  • The bill would alter the current requirements for physician-owned hospitals.

House Committee Concludes Markup; AMA Letter Shows Support For Amendment To Balance Bill Patients - From AMA

The U.S. House Committee on Energy and Commerce considered a package of amendments on Sept. 23, including one offered by Rep. Michael Burgess, MD, R-Texas. This amendment would have permitted physicians and other providers under the public health plan option to balance bill patients, and allowed patients to enter into private contracts with their physician without restrictions.

The AMA sent a letter to Rep. Burgess on Sept. 22 expressing its support for the amendment and thanking him for helping to ensure patients across the country have access to quality care as well as increased freedom and flexibility in choosing their physician. It was defeated on a roll call vote, 21-31. House leaders will craft a single bill for consideration later in the fall.
