Annual Meeting Opening Ceremony Delivers Substance and Soul

AM12_Ceremony1.JPG

The Opening Ceremony of the 67th ASSH Annual Meeting took place Thursday, with President W. P. Andrew Lee, MD and others discussing the Society's past and future, and the Grammy Award-winning Soul Children of Chicago Choir providing the joyful sounds.

A packed Grand Ballroom was treated to a comprehensive presentation on the various initiatives of the Hand Society, bookended by rollicking sets from the Soul Children.

If you missed it, Dr. Lee's entire Presidential Address will be available on the eLearning Portal in the weeks following the Annual Meeting.

Congratulations to New Members of Council, ASFH Board of Trustees

The ASSH and AFSH Nominating Committees, both chaired by Daniel J. Nagle, MD, put forth the nominees for Council at the Members Business Meeting yesterday, and the members present approved the recommendation.  The AFSH Board of Trustees recommendations were approved by Council at the Wednesday meeting.

We would like to recognize the new members of the ASSH Council and the AFSH Board of Trustees.

The new members of Council are: William Seitz, MD (Vice President), Fraser Leversedge, MD (Member Under Eight) and L. Scott Levin, MD (Member Over Eight).

The new members of the AFSH Board of Trustees are: David Lichtman, MD (Vice Chair), Jennifer M. Wolf, MD (Member-at-Large Under Five) and Peter Valente of Stryker (Member-at-Large, Industry Representative).  Richard Gelberman, MD, current Vice Chair, will chair the AFSH Board of Trustees at the conclusion of Andrew Weiland, MD's term as Chair.

In addition, the new Nominating Committee nominations from the floor of the Members Business Meeting went well. Members will be asked to vote for the new Nominating Committee members. The vote will be online and opened later this year.

Akelman_Hand.jpg

The AFSH's Our Future in Hand campaign to fund upper extremity research, education and outreach is currently underway, and you can join the push during the Annual Meeting.

Those who make a commitment to donate $25,000 or more over five years will have their hand cast, and the cast will be used to create a personalized plaque that will be displayed in the ASSH Central Office.

Join President-Elect Edward Akelman, MD (pictured above) and the many others who have visited the AFSH booth on the Gold Level of the East Tower, across from the Grand Ballroom, to make your imprint on this important campaign.

If you're in Chicago at the Annual Meeting, purchase your favorite ASSH educational products like Hand Surgery Update V and receive free shipping anywhere in the US.

EHR Standards Get Tougher Under Finalized Meaningful Use Stage 2 - from AMA

Starting as early as 2014, physician practices will be required to achieve more difficult objectives to demonstrate meaningful use of electronic health records to earn federal bonuses and prevent future penalties.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services finalized its requirements for stage 2 of the EHR incentive program in an August 23 regulation.  The final rule mandates that doctors meet a larger number of core objectives — and stricter guidelines for some of those objectives already in place — during the next part of the three-stage program.  Physicians also must adopt and demonstrate meaningful use of EHR systems by Oct. 1, 2014, or be assessed a 1% penalty from Medicare.  Read more.

By Kenneth Lin, MD

Doctors of my generation have experienced dramatic changes in the way we access the information we need to care for patients.

As a medical student 15 years ago, my "peripheral brain" consisted of fat textbooks sitting on office bookshelves or smaller, spiral-bound references stuffed into the bulging pockets of my lab coat.  As a doctor-in-training, I replaced those bulky references with programs loaded onto PDAs  Today, smartphone apps allow health professionals at all levels to access the most up-to-date medical resources such as drug references, disease-risk calculators, and clinical guidelines — anytime, anywhere.  Read more.
