Volunteer's Note

William H. Seitz, MD, Chair of the Corporate Advisory Council, has penned an extensive history of the CAC and the Commercial Support Committee (CSC) that also includes a look at future collaborations between the Hand Society and Industry.

To learn how the CAC and CSC have allowed the ASSH to, among other things, maintain a stable member registration fee for the Annual Meeting despite significantly escalating costs, read Dr. Seitz's column.

Listserv Hot Topic: What to do When a Patient Wants an Endorsement

How would you handle a patient who has had surgery for a small finger injury and is now hounding you to endorse a modified glove that he wants to market for rehabilitation purposes? One member finds himself in this situation, and he's turned to the Listserv for advice.

If you have already signed up for the Physician Listserv, you can view or contribute to the patient endorsement discussion by visiting the archives and scrolling down to the thread titled "patient wants an endorsement."  If you don't know or remember your Listserv password, you can reset your password here.

Growth in US Health Spending Remains Slow - from AAOS

US health care spending experienced historically low rates of growth in 2009 and 2010, according to the annual report of national health expenditures (NHE) published in the January issue of the journal Health Affairs.

Analysts at the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) report in the article that the increase in spending for 2009 represents the lowest rate of increase in the entire 51 year history of the NHE.  The low rate of growth, the data show, reflects lower utilization in health care than in previous years.  The report notes that US health care spending grew only 3.9 percent in 2010, reaching $2.6 trillion, or $8,402 per person, just 0.1 percentage point faster than in 2009.  Read more.

Conference Committee Members Appointed to Review SGR Legislation - from AMA

Over the last few weeks, House and Senate Democratic and Republican leaders appointed conferees to work out their respective differences on H.R. 3630, legislation that would continue funding for several expiring policies, including extended unemployment insurance, payroll tax cuts, and Medicare physician payment rates.

The conference needs to reach agreement on a longer-term bill prior to March 1, 2012, when the two-month Medicare physician payment freeze and other policies expire.  Read more.
