Remembering Dr. Dobyns

Over the years, Dr. Dobyns greatest satisfaction came from stimulating and helping maintain careers of many current hand surgeons. His career in hand surgery includes 10 years in the military, 20 years at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester and 10 years at the University of Texas Medical School in San Antonio. Despite a late start, his CV includes about 200 articles and textbook chapters. Working with long-time colleague Dr. Ronald Linscheid, their pioneering work in wrist disorders led to thousands of articles and textbook chapters on the wrist, many written by Mayo staff and graduates.

In retirement, Dr. Dobyns’ time was divided between his family, and active oversight of his favorite profession, being viewed as an information broker by some, a mentor by others, and possibly as a professional curmudgeon by many.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established to honor the life and work of James H. Dobyns, MD.  If you wish to make a donation in his memory, click here to donate online and scroll to the James H. Dobyns, MD  Memorial Fund.  The AFSH has 7 ways to donate.

Beware of Travel Scams When Booking Annual Meeting Travel

Mandalay Bay staff alerted us of a possible travel scam for booking your hotel room for the Annual Meeting. ASSH is not calling Annual Meeting attendees advising them they can book Mandalay Bay at a lower rate if they book with them and not the hotel directly. Please make your reservations directly with the hotel.

Did You Know

Did you know that the ASSH will have a mobile app for the Las Vegas Annual Meeting?  This app, which will contain all the contents of the Annual Meeting Program, Abstract Book, and link to handouts, will be available on both the iOS (iPad and iPhone) and Android platforms.  In addition, we will have a mobile website with the same content but different functionality for those who have Blackberry smartphones.

Those who go to the App Store and the Android Marketplace and download the Annual Meeting app (it’s FREE) to their iOS or Android devices will have greater functionality than those who use the mobile website.  When you download the native app to your  iOS and Android device you can:
  • Browse the list of all sessions and speakers
  • View the entire schedule of Annual Meeting activities
  • Search for any piece of information regarding the Annual Meeting program, abstracts and exhibitors
  • Create your own personal schedule inside the native app
  • Take notes on any session in the native app
  • Open handouts through an app interface
  • See all convention center maps
  • Get speaker information
  • And more
Current plans are for both apps to be available August 8.  More information will be forthcoming in WMU and to those registered for the Las Vegas Annual Meeting.

The AMA and 16 medical specialty societies issued a statement July 20 in response to a U.S. Senate “Gang of Six” proposal for deficit reduction that included full repeal of the broken Medicare physician payment formula—the sustainable growth rate (SGR). In the statement, the physician organizations commend the “Gang of Six” for recognizing that a full repeal of the SGR must be included in deficit reduction legislation.
