Volunteer's Note
The Member Engagement Task Force was organized by W. P. Andrew Lee, MD, President of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand. The ultimate objective of the task force was to make recommendations to improve the volunteer experience, which would maximize member engagement and involvement.
The members of the committee are as follows: Kodi K. Azari, MD, FACS, A. Bobby Chhabra, MD, Charles S. Day, MD, Warren C. Hammert, MD, Dawn M. LaPorte, MD, Steve K. Lee, MD, Rachel S. Rohde, MD, Craig M. Rodner, MD, and Amir Taghinia, MD. The ASSH staff liaisons were Dawn Briskey and Alexzandra Wallace-Szweka. The committee was divided into smaller work groups to analyze the various tasks and to formulate recommendations.
A small work group headed by Steve Lee analyzed transparency with regards to obtaining leadership positions within ASSH. Regarding Council positions, the group felt that applications for Council should be more specific and that discussion of the candidate at the Member Business Meeting should better explain why that particular person was selected. Regarding committee nominations, the work group felt that more information should be provided with respect to selection of committee members.
The committee structure subgroup is led by Dr. Chhabra. The group found that certain committees could mirror the Residents and Fellows Committee, which provides sufficient work, has a specific goal, and allows advancement to chairperson. Matching volunteers' interests and time to the appropriate committee is a necessity. Thanks to this group's recommendation, the ASSH website now details
the time requirements and primary tasks for each committee. In addition, the committee application asks how much time a volunteer can commit. This process allows appropriate matching between the interested volunteer and his/her time commitments.
A subgroup headed by Dr. LaPorte assessed the young leaders program. This program has been highly regarded and acts as a pathway to committee and leadership positions. In fact, three current Council members previously participated in the young leaders program. The application and the selection committee have now been standardized. In cooperation with the identity task force headed by Steven Z. Glickel, MD, this subgroup is currently assessing whether there would be a role for a similar leadership program designed for mid-career surgeons.
As you can see, the Member Engagement Task Force is a work in progress. We will continue to push forward to enhance the volunteer experience within ASSH.
Scott H. Kozin, MD
Chair, Member Engagement Task Force

Reminder: 2012 Committee Application Now Available

It is with great pleasure that I announce exciting changes to our 2012 volunteer committee application administration. In the spring of 2011, President W. P. Andrew Lee, MD, created the ASSH Member Engagement Task Force, chaired by Scott Kozin, MD. The group was tasked with improving the volunteer experience, beginning with enhancing the committee application experience. In December, Council accepted the Task Force's recommendation to revise the ASSH committee webpage with the goal of making our information more accessible and user-friendly.
Now, our
revised webpage features information about the committee's specific duties, work load, and the average time commitment necessary to complete assigned charges throughout a normal governance year. With this information, we hope you will find committees that truly match your interests, utilize your talents, and fit your schedule throughout the year.
I invite you to complete the
2012 committee application. The deadline for submission is April 2, 2012.
Thank you so much for your continuous support of our volunteer activities.
Sincerely,
Edward Akelman, MD
Chair, Committee Advisory Group
ASSH President-Elect
