International Relations Committee Update

Volunteer Note

Kevin C. Chung, MD, MS

The International Relations Committee (IRC) is excited to announce we received more than 100 requests from those interested in applying to become a 2014 ASSH International Member!  As international interest continues to increase, the IRC will explore new ways to welcome and embrace our international colleagues to increase the exchange of knowledge, camaraderie, and learning across the hand and upper limb community.

One of the ways we are doing this is by launching the International Visiting Professorship Program.  In our inaugural year, we have selected two premier educators, Drs. Terry R. Light, MD and Marwan A. Wehbe, MD to represent the ASSH in 2014.  Each will create a custom-made, educational itinerary where they will lecture, consult, complete patient evaluations, and even perform surgery, where country relations allow.  Dr. Light will be visiting India and Bangladesh and Dr. Wehbe will participate in a mission to Ecuador and one other site in Central/South America.  We have selected developing areas where our professors will be able to make the most impact.  These weeklong missions are supported by a generous travel grant by the ASSH and through the support of our Host Countries.  We look forward to reporting back on our Visiting Professors experiences later this year.  A big thank you to Nash H. Naam, MD for leading up this effort.

Attending the 69th ASSH Annual Meeting in Boston?  Join us in welcoming our 2014 International Guest Hand Society, the Brazil Society for Hand Surgery.  Our Brazilian colleagues will be featured in a special international poster section, highlighting research from Brazilian authors.  Additionally, we are seeking ambassadors to help welcome our Brazilian friends.  Be sure to check the box on your Annual Meeting registration form (registration opens next month!) if you are interested in being paired up with a Brazilian attendee.  This is an excellent way to expand your network and help create a positive experience for our international participants.  All International Guest attendees and ambassadors will be invited to a special orientation at the Annual Meeting as well as the international reception.  Ambassadors will help make introductions, be available to answer questions about the ASSH, and offer a friendly hand to help our guests navigate the Annual Meeting.

Mark your calendars!  The 1st Combined Meeting of the Singapore Hand Surgery Society (SHSS) and the ASSH, will take place in Singapore over February 25 – March 28, 2015.  Thank you to James Chang, MD for Co-Chairing this effort.  More information about the program agenda and speakers will be available later this year.
