PROGRAM OVERVIEW

With the fast paced changes and government intervention in health care impacting all physicians, an understanding and familiarity of value based care and patient related outcomes research is more essential for the hand and upper extremity surgeon. This symposium will explore how value is defined in hand surgery and discuss controversial topics while providing evidence-based treatment algorithms for a wide scope of hand and upper extremity problems. In addition, interactive question-answer sessions will be used to investigate evidence based recommendations for hot topics such as complications related to obesity and the influence of narcotic use and smoking on hand surgery outcomes.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Review the concept of what defines value in surgery, explain common outcomes measures and databases used in hand surgery and discuss evidence based treatment options for controversial problems. At the end of the symposium, audience members will be able to determine what they need to implement in their practice to improve the value they provide in patient care and understand evidence based treatment options for nerve injuries, fractures, fusions, tendon injuries and tumors in the hand and upper extremity.
