Description

The theme of thumb reconstruction has fascinated hand surgeons for over a century.  With progressive experience and technical advances, the concept of thumb reconstruction has evolved from simply making a thumb-post to a refine digit that is mobile, sensate and aesthetically pleasing.  This panel brings together world experts in thumb reconstruction to share their life-long interest and experience with thumb reconstruction to give the audience a unique perspective in thumb reconstruction, both in the adult and in the pediatric setting.

Learning Objective

Symposium 05: My Favorite Flexor Tendon Repair and Why

9:20 - 10:05 AM - Scientific Session 2

Location: Columbus, I L, Hyatt Regency Convention Center
Moderator: James Chang, MD

Faculty:

Jin Bo Tang, MD
Martin I. Boyer, MD, FRCS(C)
Robert Savage, MS, FRCS
Edward Diao, MD

Description

Most symposia on flexor tendon repair focus on the rationale for multi-strand repair, post-operative protocols, and/or the scientific basis of healing.  What is overlooked is a clear presentation of what the hand surgeon actually does in practice.  In this symposium, 4 leaders in flexor tendon surgery will first present, in detail, the exact technique they perform for a clean Zone II flexor tendon laceration.  In the discussion, they will present bullet points on why that repair technique is chosen.   In the end, the audience will vote electronically on the method that they would adopt.

Learning Objective

  • Upon completion of this session the attendee will be able to discuss optimal repair techniques for Zone II flexor tendon lacerations.

Program

9:20 – 9:27 AM Introduction and Case Presentation James Chang, MD

Faculty:

Graham Newson, Associate Director, AAOS Office of Government Relations
Honorable Bill Hazel, MD, Secretary of Health and Human Resources, Commonwealth of Virgina (Cancelled)
Andrew W. Gurman, MD, Speaker of the House of Delegates American Medical Association

Description

As the cost of health care approximates 20% of the GDP it has become more and more obvious that the present system is unsustainable.  As a result the Federal Government and the individual States are looking at many different methods of providing cost effective care.  The end result is that health care providers need to be aware of State and Federal regulations. Fortunately the situation is still fluid and the regulations can still be influenced by physicians willing become involved in the political process.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this session the attendee will be able to:
  • Discuss the status of health care legislation across the country
  • Describe the effect of Federal legislation on the individual States.
  • List how you can influence the impending legislation and regulations

Symposium 07: Evidence Based Medicine 2012 - The Use of Evidence in Daily Practice

10:40 - 11:25 AM - Scientific Session 2

Location: Columbus I L, Hyatt Regency Convention Center
Moderator: Warren C. Hammert, MD

Faculty:

Charles A. Goldfarb, MD
Jay F. Pomerance, MD
Christine J. Cheng, MD
Jennifer Moriatis Wolf, MD

Description

The practice of medicine is a combination of art and science. We do not have scientific answers for many conditions, so we must rely on the art of medicine. Experience, the art of medicine, takes many years to obtain, so what do you do until then – use science to help guide decisions.  The purpose of EBM is to clarify the science component to ensure the best prediction of outcomes – not to replace the art of medicine.  This symposium will present a series of case scenarios and demonstrate how evidence can be used to guide treatment.

Learning Objective

Upon completion of this session the attendee will be able to discuss how EBM can be used to guide treatment.

Symposium 08: Hand Smackdown

1:35 - 2:20 PM

Location: Grand Ballroom, Hyatt Regency Convention Center
Moderator: Thomas A. Wiedrich, MD
Emcee: Robert J. Strauch, MD
New Millennium Smackers Team Captain: T. Greg Sommerkamp, MD
Dura Mater Manus Team Captain: Amy L. Ladd, MD

Description

The “Hand Smackdown” is a college bowl type competition between two competing groups.  This year it’s men vs. women!  Approximately 45 minutes before the symposium, five difficult hand surgery cases in areas of Congenital, Trauma, Reconstructive, and Wrist will be exchanged in addition to one “wild card” topic.  The captains will then assign five team members each a case to discuss during the symposium.  At the beginning of the symposium, each team enters the arena and the emcee will introduce the teams.  Management of each case will be discussed for a total of 3 minutes allowing for a 60 second case introduction by Team 1, a 90 second discussion by Team 2 and a 30 second rebuttal by Team 1.  At the end of all presentations the audience will decide which team overall best managed their cases.  After voting is complete, Dr. Strauch will announce the winner and will issue a challenge for a new hand group to take on the winner at the 68th ASSH Annual Meeting next year in San Francisco.
